Are Chiropractors Doctors?

It is not uncommon for many people to do a double-take when they see the title of “Dr.” in front of their chiropractor’s name. After all, doctors only hang out in places like hospitals and urgent care facilities, right? Doctors also perform surgeries, write prescriptions, etc. So why does my chiropractor have the same distinction? Are chiropractors doctors, too?

The short answer is “Yes!” Chiropractors are doctors! Sure, we don’t oversee many of the responsibilities above, but chiropractors are considered Doctors of Chiropractic. And truth be told, we go through similarly stringent education and training to earn our license. This includes an average of four years of post-undergraduate studies, a year of clinic requirements, and a four part board examination.

As a doctor of chiropractic, our responsibilities for your care can include the following:

  • Treat patients’ neuromusculoskeletal system through chiropractic care

  • Manipulate muscles, joints, and the spine, with the goal of achieving proper alignment

  • Assess patient conditions through physical exams

  • Review medical history

  • Administer X-rays to better understand a patient’s condition

  • Define short and long-term care goals

  • Make diet and exercise recommendations

  • Maintain and track patient information related to conditions and care

  • Refer patients to other providers when necessary

  • Collaborate with other healthcare providers when appropriate to treat the whole patient
